"it is now safe to shutdown your computer" on Server 2003

I have a Windows server 2003 VM running in VMWare Server 2.0 that was upgraded from a migrated Windows 2000 box. When I try to shut it down I still get a "it is now safe to shutdown your computer" screen. there doesn't seem to be any way to power it off completely. Even the poweroff command doesn't do anything when it is in that state. There are no APM options in Windows and I can't see anything relevant in VMWare. Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you installed the latest set of vmware tools on the virtual machine?  That should solve it.

The latest version of the tools were installed before the upgrade to Server 2003 and seem to be working. There is no prompt to install or upgrade in the Status box of the VMWare Server web UI.

go ahead and reinstall the tools - uninstall/reinstall or just install over them with the latest available.   The upgrade most likely nullified the tool set as they were for 2000.

In addition to not having AMP enabled, you need to check BIOS and ACPI:

Thanks for the suggestion, that was probably a good idea anyway but it's not affected the problem. I still get the screen after shutting down from within Windows and the Reset command doesn't do anything once it's got to that screen.

the tools or the acpi?  With the new tools are there any settings available.

also a few control keys:

Ctrl-B       power on a VM
Ctrl-E       power off a VM
Ctrl-R       reset power on a VM

I still get the 'it is now safe to shutdown your computer' screen but the power off command now works.
