DHCP Service Migration from Server 2003 to Server 2008

We currently have a server that is acting as a domain controller, DNS server, and DHCP server running Server 2003 32 bit.

I was able to successfully setup DNS services on the Server 2008 64 bit machine, everything replicated just fine from this machine.

I haven't tried to add the role to the Server 2008 machine quite just yet.  When I do add the DHCP role, the DHCP information will NOT replicate -- correct?  Do I need to to manually set it up and add all my reservations?

Indeed, DHCP does not replicate - if its a simple DHCP set-up then just decommission the old DHCP server and set up and authorise the new one - it its a complex DHCP setup then see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc776587(WS.10).aspx

Not sure that will work - it's a 64-bit target - I haven't tried it though.

A backup then restore of the DHCP DB *might* work, and you can test it easy enough.

If not, you will probably need to recreate the reservations again or find a way to script them.

WINS is a separate service.

The server must be Authorized by right clicking it in Active Directory and selecting Authorize.

No WINS is a seperate service, if you use WINS tou will have to install this as well

No you need to Authourise the server, just right click on the DHCP server in the DHCP console and select authorize

Should decomission the old DHCP server before installing the new one on the Server 2008 box?  Or can I install the Server 2008 "DHCP" role while the old one is still up.

You can simply backup the DHCP database and restore it to 2008 DHCP.

Do it with the 2008 DHCP console.

The best way to do this is:

> install the DHCP role on 2008
> backup an restore your DHCP configuration
> authorize your Windows 2008 DHCP server but don't activate the scope
> set a short lease time on the 2003 DHCP server when
> leave it enough time for the previous lease to expire
> deactive the 2003 scope
> activate the 2008 scope

because of the short lease on the 2003 DHCP they will all request a new lease from the 2008 server quite quickly after deactivating the 2003 server.

You can then remove the 2003 DHCP component.

Just remember if you have any routers/switches configured to use aDHCP helper service that you update the IP address.

Depends how you are setting up the new DHCP server, if you are setting it up manually by creating the new scopes on it etc, you can leave the old one in place. Set p yhr new one BUT DO NOT AUTHORIZE IT. Wait until myou have set it all up, then unauthorise the existing server and authorize the new one.

It can be authorized as long as the scopes are not activated, if the scopes are activated it just gets messy!
