Question

Terminal Server File Association

Asked by: ValleyENT

Hello All,

I am having an issue where my url shortcuts are not launching. It lost the file association to the HTTP and HTTPS file assosiation. When I manually change it for the Administrator user account it works temporarily. When I log off then back on It no longer works.

When I open File Association for HTTP open settings I see:
"C:\Program Files\Citrix\system32\iexplore.exe" "%1"

If I change it to "C:\program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe" -no home (Which is what it is supposed to be) then try the shortcuts it works. Once I log off it loses the settings and this is happening to all 20 users on this terminal server.

How can I change this within the registry so all users will maintain the HTTP and HTTPS file association?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a previous EE posting on using GPO's to configure file extension associations that might help - http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Q_22688282.html.

Good luck...

You have enabled Server to Client Content Redirection; you need to disable that again for the local IE to open with URLs.

This isn't happening through Citrix connections. It is happening on a citrix box through both citrix and RDC connections.

The Server to Client Content Redirection is a global setting; once it has been applied, it'll be active (more or less succesfully) for every connection.

Well, no changes to the GPO's were made. And I haven't made any modifications to the server other than uninstalling internet explorer 7, going back to 6, then installing 7 to fix another issue which was fixed but this issue came about afterwards.

This has nothing to do with GPOs, this is a feature that's only available through the Citrix configuration.
The articles above will show you where to configure this; you need to disable the CCR.

Ok, I fixed the issue and I will give specifics to the issue.

Firstly, this was an issue on a Citrix Server but also hand an effect on RDP/RDC sessions. I did look to see if Client Content Redirection and Client Server Redirection were enabled for some odd reason and they were both disabled. Comparitively my other 10 TS servers were not having the same issue and nothing changed other than the re-installation of IE7. I suspect that the uninstallation of IE7 actually created the issue and for some reason the file assosiation for HTTP and HTTPS redirected to the citrix\ieexplorer.exe directly.

I resolved this issue by Exporting the HTTP and HTTPS registry keys from on of my other terminal servers:

HKLM>Software>Classes>HTTP
HKLM>Software>Classes>HTTPS

I exported those from a function server, and imported them into the registry on the broken box, of course you should create a backup first.

I logged off, then back in, success. I also had my other users log out and made sure there sessions were fully disconnected and reset then logged back in, success.

All in all this was an annoying issue and thanks for everyone help.
