Make sure the WIndows 7 client is using a valid IP address and that the DNS configuration is set to use your servers IP address as DNS.

You may be getting your IP configuration from another source.

Can you post ipconfig /all results for viewing?

Hello argonaute,

Please use : ipconfig /all
It will display your DNS Setting
As dematzer say it, the DNS need to be set to your domain controller server address.

Regards.

Do you have a Lynksys router/modem?
This IP address is from the Linksys router.

Check the DHCP service is running on you server, do you have Small Business Server?  If so which version?
If you are using SBS then I would recomend using the DHCP service on the server and disabling the one on the router.

Is the server Small Business Server?
If so which version?

You IP address is coming from the Linksys router/modem.  If your using SBS then the recommended approach is to use the SBS server for DHCP not the router, I just need to know which version of SBS your using?

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 08:28:47ID: 25710106

SBS 2003, V 5.2.2893.0
But all XP clients have no problem and this problem was encountered with Vists too. I know the DHCP/Server issue and not DHCP/router but still why it works with XP and not with Vista/Win7

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 08:34:00ID: 25710135

I would be suprised if it worked with any of them to be honest..

Your SBS server will have a DNS service running on it.  All the SRV records associated with your SBS server including the domain details will be stored in this service (hopefully the SBS server has it's own IP address in the DNS server configuration of the network card?)

If your clients are pointing to the following for DNS then they are not registering themselves properly and will not find resource records correctly.

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 196.43.50.190
                                       196.43.53.190

This needs to be changed.  I would suggest turning off the DHCP server on your router, enabling it on your Server (hopefully your scopes will already be configured), you may need to activate the DHCP server you can do this by right clcking on it in the DHCP console on the server and select activate.

Run through the Connect to the Internet wizard in the to-do list in Server Manager on the SBS server and enter the DNS information I have posted above when prompted.

If you then run:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

your clients will get an IP address from your SBS server and not the router.

No your right there is no difference.
I would doubt that if you disconnected this computer from the domain you would be able to re-join.

It too will not be able to find the domain as it's using your ISP's DNS servers which have no details about your internal domain.

On your server, can you do an ipconfig /all and post the results.

by: leakim971Posted on 2009-10-31 at 08:55:34ID: 25710220

delta2 is already on the domain so no problem.
To add Argonaute on the domain, change the DNS setting on it's NIC to your SBS server (ex : Start menu -> All programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> network cards -> double click on the active NIC, double click on tcp/ip protocol, DNS part put address of the sbs server)

After that type in IE : http://sbsserver /connectcomputer

When you have successfully add you computer to your sbs domain you can change the dns setting to get values from DHCP.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 08:57:52ID: 25710227

That will not fix the problem it will just temporarily make it go away.

The Small Business Server should be acting as DHCP and DNS if it's configured correctly then it will work properly and there is no need to manually make changes.

If the clients are not using the SBS server for DNS then they will experience all sorts of other issues as well.

by: leakim971Posted on 2009-10-31 at 09:04:23ID: 25710246

we are agree dematzer, I never said the main problem go away.
I want to answer to : Cannot connect new Windows 7 client to the domain
there's a "mistake" in the current network design, again, we are agree

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:06:45ID: 25710254

It is better to resolve the overall problem than to temporarily fix it.

argonauteTM >  If you follow the steps I have previously published the problem will be resolved for all your clients.

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:17:18ID: 25710290

Yes demazter I have changed the DNS server settings, run ipconfig/release (on server, right?) and gave IP 0.0.0.0 and then ipconfig/renew and gave error: cannot find DHCP server. One question I am not sure by what you say " .. right click on the DHCP console on the server and select activate..." I think I'm lost there, please explain

by: leakim971Posted on 2009-10-31 at 09:19:32ID: 25710301

>It is better to resolve the overall problem than to temporarily fix it
I can't disagree with that, for sure.

But I don't know how many computers are using this network config and WHY this entire network is configured to use a DHCP and a DNS from a router.

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:23:14ID: 25710313

2 x XPs and 1 x Vista turned Win7

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:24:55ID: 25710316

Can you post ipconfig from the server?

The server should have a fixed IP addres (hopefully this is in the network card details) it should also have the routers IP address as the gateway.  And it's own IP address as the DNS server.

Do the following: start > run > services.msc check the dHCP server service male sure it is set to automatic and it is started.  If it's not started right click and select start.

Then goto start > Administrative Tools > DHCP once in the DHCP console right click on the server name and select authorise.

Before doing the above you need to disable the DHCP service on the router on the LAN configuration.

by: leakim971Posted on 2009-10-31 at 09:25:31ID: 25710318

Thanks argonauteTM.
I let dematzer finish resolving the problem, he's right.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:27:06ID: 25710323

leakim971 > This is not uncommon, if a router is introduced into the network after the server/clients has been configured and it has DHCP enabled then by design the SBS DHCP service will shut down.

It's after that happens that problems start to occur like the one we are experiencing now.

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:27:27ID: 25710326

Any suggestions? where do I find the DHCP console?

Yes demazter I have changed the DNS server settings, run ipconfig/release (on server, right?) and gave IP 0.0.0.0 and then ipconfig/renew and gave error: cannot find DHCP server. One question I am not sure by what you say " .. right click on the DHCP console on the server and select activate..." I think I'm lost there, please explain.........

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 09:29:31ID: 25710339

no you should not need to do ipconfig /release on the server as it shoud be a fixed IP address.

Can you confirm the following:

start > Run > Services.msc - is the DHCP Server service started and set to automatic?
can you post ipconfig /all results from your server

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:03:55ID: 25710482

There is no DHCP Server service only DHCP client service and this is set in automatic. When doing start > Administrative Tools > DHCP, there is no DHCP, nothing like it. Just want to be sure we are talking the same language. I tried to access the router again to make sure I disabled the DHCP service on the LAN configuration but it inaccessible after the changes we've done. I did however disabled where it said DHCP enabled/disabled on the very first window that appear of the screen. This said I am still able to communicate between the XP and server but no internet both on XPs and server.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:07:10ID: 25710495

No DHCP server service on the server?
It''s installed with Small Business Server by default.

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:13:19ID: 25710519

I will copy all the list for you and send it, DHCP consol either

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:16:20ID: 25710528

The most amazing part now is that I have lost internet access on both server and XPs but when I ping the server I can see it. I still have internet on the Win7 and can still access the router if need be.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:19:09ID: 25710536

This all sounds very odd.

Can you post the ipconfig /all from the server?

I am trying to help but need the information that i have asked for so I can ascertain how your network is configured.

Right, your server has an APIPA address.
Can you give it an IP address (it should have had one)
It also needs to have the default gateway (this should be the IP address of your router)
And the DNS Server address should be it's own IP address (remove the others)

It doesn't look to me as if the DHCP service is running!
I would suggest it has probably been uninstalled!

You have 2 options, either re-install it from add/remove programs and windows components.

Or re-enable the DHCP service on your router and configure the DNS section as your servers ip address.

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:49:23ID: 25710679

APIPA address, you mean Autoconficuration IP address?????

Can you give it an IP address (it should have had one), if it should have had one where should it have taken it from?

It also needs to have the default gateway (this should be the IP address of your router), you mean 192.168.1.1., because this is what it says on the basic setup of the router.

And the DNS Server address should be it's own IP address (remove the others), which DNS server address on the router or on the server? If on the server we have set it on 196.43.50.190

demazter

Or re-enable the DHCP service on your router and configure the DNS section as your servers ip address.

I will try this avenue, the other is too complicated but please explain the last part " .... and configure the DNS section as your servers ip address...."

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:56:51ID: 25710729

The server should haveits own IP address as the DNS entry.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-31 at 10:58:00ID: 25710742

On the router DHCP configuration it should have an option to set the DNS server, this should be the IP address of your server

by: argonauteTMPosted on 2009-10-31 at 11:01:16ID: 25710766

You mean I must put type 196.43.50.190 as IP address or it should have one automatically?

Ok, this is getting a little messy so I will try to start again.

Your server needs to have a fixed IP address so give it an address in the same range as your router.

So if your router is 192.168.0.1 then give your server 192.168.0.200
enter the ip address of your router in the servers TCP/IP configuration under gateway.
And in the section called subnet enter 255.255.255.0
in the DNS section enter the servers IP address (192.168.0.200 or what you set in the first step)

then on the router in the DHCP configuration under the setting for DNS enter the servers IP address (the one you set in the first step)
And re-enable the router DHCP.  If the router DHCP configuration allows you to specify a scope make sure the last IP address is .199 so that the server address doesn't get given out.

Any IP Address that starts with 169.x.x.x means that the computer / server does not have a proper IP Address.

Servers should always be setup with a Fixed IP Address not a Dynamically assigned IP Address.

Hi demazter

After all the tries performed on the server today it has been established that DHCP service is not running, no IP address, the server is cannot act as DHCP server. It looks as if the OS installation is incomplete or wrong. Everything points towards re-intallation or serious revamp. I thank you very much for your input and time, everything has been very informative and at long last I know what has been happening with this server, first hand. I very much appreciated your assistance even if there was no solution found to the problem, the problem is deeper than I thought. Thanks

Is this your only Windows Server?

If it is then DHCP may not have installed as your Router was probably stopping it.

If it is not your only server, then there may be another server issuing DHCP addresses.

Assuming it is your only server - just install DHCP (control panel / Add-remove Progams / Add / Remove Windows Components) after disabling it on the router and then you should be okay.

We already went through that alan.

To be honest I think the author needs to get someone in to have a look at the server config/setup.

The steps I outlined in my first posts would have resolved this.
