Question

format and setup PC into network

Asked by: anushahanna

I have 2 computers on the SBS 2003 network, with this situation.

Computer1 for User1- good one.
Computer2 for User2- has hardware defects.

User1 has left the company. The manager want to format computer1 and set it up for User2 and discard computer2.

I have the WInXPPro CD with keys, and also a network drive to copy all the files that need to be saved from Computer2 that needs to be trasferred to the 'new' computer1.

Can you please outline what are the steps I need to take to make sure I cover everything needed to accomplish this.

Thanks

Since you have the Windows CD and Key, you need drivers for machine 1. Look up the model on the Internet and get network, video and audio drivers to get started. FDISK the machine, delete all partitions, FDISK /MBR, and then run the Windows CD to format and install Windows. Be ready with CD's of the network, audio and video drivers. Assuming it goes, look for chipset, mouse (maybe), and all other drivers the vendor has. Patch to but excluding SP2. Install SP2. Patch up to but excluding SP3. Add IE7 manually. Update Flash. Install SP3, IE8 and patch. Go slow and orderly so as not to have a lot of problems. Then add AntiVirus and the rest of your sofware. Then put it on the domain and set it up. ... Thinkpads_User

What is the purpose of FDISK the machine, delete all partitions, FDISK /MBR? Is it mandatory.

Hi,

No need of doing fdisk and fdisk/mbr.

Fdisk is used to managed the partition on the drive and fdisk/mbr is used to fix the corrupted MBR .

Follow the below steps:

1. install the XP on Computer1( install SP2 after the os installation).
2. Install the drivers ( find the driver for the chipset keep it in the CD) and anti-virus.
3. Install the software which is required for the user2.
4. Move the data from computer2 to computer1

Note: If Computer1 is in good condition no need of going for os installation , just install the software which is required for user2 and move the data from computer2 to computer1. Don't waste the time on installing the OS.

@anushahanna - The reason to use FDISK to delete partitions and repair the Master Boot Record is borne out of a couple of failed installs, and IBM Support explained why to do this and how to do it on my IBM machines. Basically you want a clean disk before starting. With IBM recovery CD's it is pretty well mandatory. With other machines, and with just a Windows CD, it is optional. I would do it on my road to ensuring a long term reliable machine.   ... Thinkpads_User

Computer1 is too slow, so perhaps we reinstall will help, was our thought.

'long term reliable machine' maybe worth it. Could you provide the commands for FDISK & to delete partitions, please.

thanks.

FDISK is a menu driven progam (that I have to recall when/if I use it). There is a menu to view partitions and there is a menu to delete partitions, both DOS and non-DOS. So what I do is run FDISK and then Enter. That brings up the menus.

FDISK is available on some recovery CD's. You can google for Killdisk and that will do roughly the same thing in a different way.
