Browse All TopicsHello. I am performing a migration of an SBS2003 network to SBS2008. There is an existing W2K3 terminal server currently running on the existing SBS2003 network. Are there any specific instructions, whitepapers or suggestions in this scenario? The existing terminal server should really continue to function as normal during the migration and after the SBS2003 box is decomissioned, right? Any ideas would really be appreciated. Thanks.

you may find this link very useful while migrating 2003 server running terminal services http://www.experts-exchang
Just one more suggestion :
You cannot run Terminal Server on a SBS 2008 Standard Box
You can run a terminal server when you have SBS 2008 Premium, which gives you an additional license for Windows 2008 Server which you can and should use as a terminal server, even with premium you can't use server-1 as the terminal server ;

The only thing you need to be concerned is where the TS Licensing server is. Usually this is installed on the domain controller, so in your case the 2003 SBS box.
You will need to do one of the following options:
1. Install a 2008 TS Licensing Server on the 2008 SBS box.
2. Install a 2003 TS Licensing Server on the 2003 TS itself.
In both cases you will need to call the MS Clearinghouse and tell them your licensing server will be decommissioned and that you need your license packs reissued. You can see what you have on the 2003 Licensing server (that again I assume is on the 2003 SBS box).
Once you do that you are all set.

Thanks for the responses!. I am trying to determine which one is the licensing server. I open "terminal server licensing" on the ts-server, but it points to a server which does not exist any longer. It says "no terminal server licensing server exits..." Can it be running w/o a licensing server? Is that possible?

yeah you'll be fine as long as you've properly migrated active directory to 2008. you don't need to concern yourself with the terminal server.
