Question

Break away from Windows 2003 SBS and move to new Windows 2008 SBS Standard server.

We would like to upgrade an existing server running Windows 2003 Small Business Server to Windows 2008 Small Business Server Standard.  This will involve a new installation on new hardware, and we would like to transfer active directory, user profiles, etc. over to the new server. What is the process of properly moving a domain from one SBS server to another?

In the above blog post is a comprehensive guide through the Microsoft method of migrating. Note that there are links within the blog post to the Microsoft specific documents that you will need to read through to understand the hows/whys of the steps in the guide.

Plus, there are a lot of extra bits based on our many migrations.

step one..
make sure you are completely patched up.
make sure you are 100% sure you have no spyware/virus
clean out temp files (always makes processes faster)
make sure you have a couple of different kinds of backups.
uninstall any software on the server that isnt part of the SBS install (such as antivirus apps)
allow yourself some time and have a contingency plan..

then follow the ms guide.

Also - give serious consideration to the pros and cons of a clean install.

About how long would this process take?  With 18 users, Exchange, and around 300GB of data?
