Question

Cluster service is not starting!

Asked by: anupam1983

I've 3 servers:

1 DC+HT+CAS (windows SP1+exchange 2007 SP1)
2 nodes (windows SP2), have installed only pre-requisites of exchange 2007

I've selected MNS quorum during cluster configuration. Then joined the second node as well. everything was well until I disabled both private and public NIC on active node to check failover. But unfortunately when I enabled them back, and tried to get the cluster back, it was showing

The cluster service on node1 can't be started
Network path was not found
Error ID: -2147024843 (80070035)

When I tried to restart cluster service, was getting the beolow error:

Could not start the cluster service on local computer
error: the process terminated unexpectedly

Afterchecking in the event viewer on the node, I found the below error:

Error ID: 1009
Cluster service could not join an existing server cluster and could not form a new server cluster. Cluster service has terminated.

Error: 7031
The Cluster Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 13 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 960000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

If the cluster is comprised of two nodes one should not be using MNS quorum and shared quorum would be a better choice.

Quote from MS:
If I have a 2-node MNS cluster, and lose one server, will the cluster continue to function?

No, in order to keep an MNS cluster running, it must have a majority of nodes online, i.e. (<Number of nodes configured in the cluster>/2) + 1. The following table shows the various combinations of configured nodes and node failures:

Oh! So was it obvious for my setup to react that way? Frankly speaking I've not configured the File shared witness that time, I though okay I'll create it after testing the failover.

I've one more doubt, was it because of installing windows SP2? Is there any way to bring the cluster back or recreating them would be the best possible option?

It is possible that is the issue with cluster.
A few things can be done, could evict the non working node and then bring it back into the cluster.
Could even change the the quorum to shared quorum.
SP2 should not effect the situation.

Great article. But unfortunately for Windows 2008 editions. Is the anything similar to that for Windows 2003? Does that /forcequorum work for Windows 2003 as well?
