User with Full Control cannot open an Excel file on NAS

Dear All,

Brief Info:
I have a QNAP NAS. It is mapped to the server as an iSCSI device.
I have several folders inside the NAS and i have added users from the AD and given them permissions on these folders.

Problem:
I have a user whom i gave Full Control over a folder. However she cannot view the Excel file which was copied into the folder by another user. The file is also not a Read-Only file.

May i know what might be the problem?

Also, is there a permission on the folders where i can set so that i can prevent the user from copying the folders into their hard disk?

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Best Regards,
Thomas

Dear Thomas,

can other users (but the one who copied the file into the folder) access the file, or is it only one user who can not?
Do the users access the data directly from/on the QNAP NAS, or via a share on the Windows 2003 Server?
Has the user Full Control on the folder, and is this inherited "down" to all objects within that folder?

To your second question "is there a permission on the folders where i can set so that i can prevent the user from copying the folders into their hard disk?", the answer is "no" when the user can read, he can copy.

Kind regards,
Soren
Does she have a proper viewer?

Dear slemmesmi,

can other users (but the one who copied the file into the folder) access the file, or is it only one user who can not?  --> the guy who copied the files into the folder cannot open the file as well and it also happened to another user.

Do the users access the data directly from/on the QNAP NAS, or via a share on the Windows 2003 Server? --> They access the data via a share on Windows 2003 Server.

Has the user Full Control on the folder, and is this inherited "down" to all objects within that folder?
--> let me check on this. I thought permission inheritance was by default in Windows Server 2003?
Dear Gapseudo081,

yes inheritance is default in Windows Server 2003, but please check anyway.
Also check that there are no "deny" of permissions on the folder.
Last - check that your share is shared to "Everyone" with "Full Control" share permission.

Looking forward to hear about your findings.

Kind regards,
Soren
Dear Soren,

There are no explicit deny permissions set on the folder. And my share is to Everyone with Full Control Permissions.

Now i have got another user who have problems opening a jpeg file from the NAS.

This is very strange. Could it be because when the file was copied into the NAS, there were already permissions set on the file?

Best Regards,
Thomas
