Install IE8 via Group Policy on XP client

I want to install Internet Explorer 8 via group policy. To test, I want to deploy it to 1 system. I have created a custom MSI for IE8 using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit 8. I have put this in a shared location that has read access to all users. I have set up the policy by referring to this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816102 assigning it to a computer. I removed "Authenticated Users" from the security filter and just added my 1 test system. I then checked "Enforce" on the policy. Is this the correct way to do this? Because it does not seem to be working. I have rebooted the system 3 times. I have also run "gpupdate /force". IE8 install is not running. The custom package was set up as a silent install, but I have checked the process list, and again, have rebooted.

Thanks for the comment, Richard. We don't currently have WSUS set up, but would like to at some point. So I wonder if this is a common issue with IE8 and GPO? Waiting for more comments.

There has been some success with deploying IE 8 with GPO. If you create an install package with IEAK in the FULL-dir there is a msi file.

Thanks Steeler. I have already gone through the article and created a package and it installs fine if I manually run it. But the group policy deployment part is not working for some reason. Now, I did look in the application event log and noticed I got an error at the time I created the policy: Installation was unable to read the MSI file [path]. The following error was encountered: SQL query syntax invalid or unsupported. This must be the problem, but I don't know what SQL has to do with this. Any ideas?

That sounds like the MSI file is corrupted. Have to tried unpacking the files one more? What happens if you execute the file manually?

If this all doesn't help, what does the Windows Installer Logging file come up with?

As I said in the previous post, if I install it manually it runs and installs as it is supposed to. I don't think the windows installer log is going to have anything, as it never runs.
