Question

EBS 2008 not routing mail

Asked by: stingcctv

Alright so we're currently migrating the domain to an EBS 2008 setup, we have 1 parent server that is just a hyper v server. Management, Messaging, and Security are all virtualized on this parent server.

There are 2 nics installed on the server, one WAN, one LAN. For testing purposes we're using a simple wrt54g router to forward down from the ISP to the WAN side of the security server.

We are able to telnet internally into the messaging server at port 25, however we can't do it externally. I have opened up the ports in all virtual firewalls. We have even put the WAN side of the security server into DMZ mode.

I have also created a NAT under the WAN side of RRAS to the IP of the Messaging Server. Can someone help me out as this is bringing our migration to a hault, thanks!

You probably need to create a port forwarding rule on your firewall to direct port 25 into your exchange server. Opening up a port just allows traffic through, your router isn't your exchange server so that port must be forwarded to your exchange server to allow email traffic to be answered by your exchange server and not your firewall.

Thanks Steven, but I have that setup, I have the port forwarded from the linksys router to the security server, I've opened 25 in the windows firewall of not only the security server but the exchange server as well, I've also created a NAT under the 'WAN' connection of RRAS to send port 25 requests to the exchange server. But I'm still not getting mail routed, or getting a telnet request thru to the exchange server.

Sorry for my delay.

Can you ping your router from the internet? It sounds like a configuration problem on your router. They linksys are pretty basic.  Where are you using NAT and RRAS?  Does your SMTP traffic just go

Firewall > Security Server (I am guessing some sort of anti-spam) > Mail server?

Where is your RRAS involved??  You might have a conflicting rule or setting?

Be careful with  two nicks on the messaging server. It is best to use one, and disable the other.  Exchange routing gets messed up and you will see al messages stuck in the queue (run exchange troubleshooter).
In order to make this work, you need to create new  routing rules in exchange for each of the interfaces.
