Question

System Center Essentials - Loading Reporting Hierarchy Failed

Asked by: legalsrl

Ok people,

I need some help trying to resolve one of our issues if you please....

If we go in to SCE 2007 that's installed as part of EBS 2008, then we get

My suspicion is the problem may be IIS related.  For instance, on my EBS management server, the URL for the SQL report service is http://localhost/Reports$SCE and if I open that URL it works.  My EBS systems were installed using the documented procedures using all the wizards.  The SQL / IIS configuration was done with the wizards and the names created for the SQL report service are the defaults.  The names in your trace and error message indicate you are not using the default names which implies you did not install using the EBS defaults.  Is this the case?  If so, you may want to install SCE again.  I believe there was a posting in the EBS Team Blog on how to reinstall EBS components.

Hiya
I definitely installed using all the defaults and it's definitely related to the SQL Reporting Services, but something I agree has got screwed up.....

SCE works, I just can't get to any reports......so I'm loathed to reinstall it.....

Any idea where that post on the EBS blog is ?
Thanks
Si

Interesting.  While I was checking for the SCE re-install steps, I found the following comment on the EBS blog.  Looks like it might be your fix.  It's a known problem and a hotfix is available.  Hope this helps...

Hi Si,
Sorry I didn't get back to you.  Haven't had time to be on here for a couple weeks now.  Anyways, to bad, I thought for sure the fix would resolve your problem.  It really seems to me that the problem is a misconfigured web site or a permissions issue with IIS.  I'm not up to speed on IIS 7 so I'm not sure what to look for.

Try this, though...  Open IIS Manager, expand the Default Web Site and you should see the Web directories available.  Two of them are for SCE Reports.  On my server they are Reports$SCE and ReportServer$SCE.  If you right click, select Manage Application and then select browse, it should show you the SQL Server Reporting Services home page.  Locate the folder for "Microsoft.SystemCenter.Essentials.Report.Library" and click to open.  You should see a number of files that make up the reports.  There is two files for each report type.  One looks like a frontend and the second has an extension RPDL.  If you open the one that does not have the RPDL extension, it appears to be the front-end that generates the report.  It will allow you to select report options and has a "View Report" button to view the report.  As you can tell, I'm not a SQL programmer either so I'm not sure what the relationship or structure of the files are.

My point to all of this is that if you can't get into the web site folders then you have a permissions problem or a configuration problem with the web site.  If that's the case, you may want to check with some SQL / IIS experts on what to look for in the configuration.  I've attached a copy of my web.config for the Reports$SCE site.  It may give you some clues.

Si,

Another possiblility comes to mind.  By default SCE uses port 80 for the SQL report services.  Apparently, if you install Sharepoint services, it takes over port 80 and changes SCE reporting services to port 8080.  Go to the SCE console and select the administration tab.  Select "Settings" and locate Reporting in the view pane.  Double click and check the port settings.  Confirm that they match IIS configuration for reporting services.

Dan.

Si,

I think I found what you need.  Located within the program files folder on all of the EBS servers is the Windows Essential Business Server folder that contains configuration files and binaries for the wizards used in EBS.  Included in this structure are the installation files for a number of the components used including SQL server express, Exchange, SCE and so on.  I would try running the following MSI file to see if it re-installs the SQL report server components:  C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\SCE\Setup\i386\Reporting2007.msi

If that fails, I'd try running the SCE setup again which is here: C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\SCE\SetupSCE.exe

Good Luck!!

by: vindenPosted on 2009-10-02 at 06:46:06ID: 25477792

We had a similar problem on our EBS and in our case the problem was what Dan said : sharepoint took over port 80 on IIS and therefor the reporting tool of SCE was inaccessible.

by: legalsrlPosted on 2009-10-02 at 07:15:55ID: 25478102

Hiya

The Sharepoint site is bound to 17524, and the Report Server is bound to 80

I've right clicked the x64 install and chosen Repair which doesn't seem to do much, so I'm assuming that I'm going to need to run the SetupSCE again which I'll do tonight

Cheers
Si

by: legalsrlPosted on 2009-10-02 at 07:17:28ID: 25478117

If I run the SetupSCE, then I need to remove it and reinstall it ?

There's no repair option.

You can't locate the SCE install program?  Is it not in the C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\SCE\ folder?   It should be.  If not, then you may need to re-install the EBS binaries.  Here's a posting from the EBS Team Blog that describes the process of repairing the EBS binaries on the three servers.  It looks like a process that you need to follow carefully or you could have more problems.
http://blogs.technet.com/essentialbusinessserver/archive/2009/03/03/how-to-repair-windows-essential-business-server-components-using-mms-msi.aspx

Not sure if you saw this link but I'll throw it in as well... "How to install the SCE Management Server"
It seems to be aimed more at a full product install on a standard Windows 2008 server, not EBS.

Hi Dan,

No, after uninstalling it, that directory no longer exists !!!!

I'll have a go at the binaries and come back to you

OK boys and girls,

I finally ended up having to reinstall the server.....Dan I see a post from you on t'internet about doing this.....

when I reinstalled the Management Server, EBS was totally groovy and redeployed itself with all of the settings that it had previously

It basically realised it was part of the domain and was very very clever

Note to everyone - although you can, NEVER NEVER NEVER remove System Center Essentials from EBS....you have to totally reinstall the server
