Question

How to reinstall SCE07 on EBS 2008

Asked by: FreechoiceIT

Hi All

I am having a unfathomable degree of trouble with an SCE 2007 reinstall on the Management server of EBS 2008.

I have read in places that it is designed not to be uninstallable, and in others that people uninstall betas etc, to install the full version. In any case here is what happened.

Uninstalled SCE 2007 as we messed up WSUS and couldn't see another way to uninstall only that portion.

The uninstall of SCE07 went something like this:

1. Click uninstall
2. Confirm
3. ERROR CAN'T UNINSTALL

However, upon reboot, SCE07 is gone, HALF of wsus is gone, HALF of the SQL Express it ran on is gone. None have left behind uninstallers or anything. By half i mean, SCE's installation wizard detects all of its subcompents as still installed, but the majority of files, registry keys, and the some of the uninstallers in Programs & Features are gone.

I have gotten WSUS uninstalled manually and now pass this check in the SCE07 installer, the massive problem i am having is SQL.

Trying to reinstall SCE 2007, i reach the SQL configuration screen, where there are 3 options.

1. Install using SQL Express on this server
2. Install using an existing SQL installation on this server
3. Install using an existing SQL installation on another server.

it says 2 & 3 require SQL Reporting services to be installed and configured on the Management server where SCE is being installed.

So, after much googling, and attempting to follow manual SQL unisntall proceedures, all 3 options are stilled greyed out. I am too scared to fully uninstall all SQL related things (ie, delete all related registry keys en-masse) for fear of damaging the Windows Internal Database. So the following items are still installed:

SQL Server Native Client
SQL Server Setup Support Files

If you run the Bootstrapper to uninstall SQL, it still lists the SCE instance as uninstallable, always did. The SQL Configuration tool does not show this instance as installed.

So i arrive at a Junction:

Option 1: Warning: Installing SQL Server 2005 Express is not supported on this architecture.
Am i correct in assuming this is because its detecting another instance of SQL Express, and SQL Express doesn't support multiple instances? I Am using a SCE 07 standard disc, maybe i should find the installer that is packaged into EBS somehow?

Option 2 is unfavourable, as we dont have a license to install SQL Server 2005 or 2008 onto Management server directly.

Option 3 requires Reporting services to be installed, which we cannot get to install either.

So, I am hoping for some advice on how to fix this massive mess. Ideally we want to regain the ability to use Option 1, installing SCE onto management server using the prepackaged SQL Express.

Is the SCE installation that comes packaged with EBS2008 available on the install disc somewhere? I cant find it.

I hope my post makes sense, but it probably doesn't as i've been beating my head against the wall on this for 4 days straight and a coherrent idea of where i'm at is not plausible with my current state of mind.

Any advice would be fantastic, and i will be eternally grateful.

Thanks, Charles

Here are some suggestions I would try.

Try using "Your Uninstaller" to clear up and finish your uninstalls  http://www.ursoftware.com/

Then try  How to manually uninstall SQL Express if uninstalling from Add/Remove Programs fails

Did you use this guide to remove wsus ?

You may need to run MMS.msi to re-install the EBS configuration binaries.  You may have a problem with corrupted or missing files in some of the EBS components.   One symptom will be wizards that fail to run correctly on EBS.  Take a look at this blog entry on the EBS Team Blog.  (http://blogs.technet.com/essentialbusinessserver/archive/2009/03/03/how-to-repair-windows-essential-business-server-components-using-mms-msi.aspx)

Also, where are you installing the SCE component from?  The setup used by EBS is located in "C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\SCE\SetupSCE.exe".  I suspect you should be installing SCE from here as it will have the EBS specific configuration files and all additional products required for SCE, including SQL .

Dsteart,

I have the MSI Cleanup utility from microsoft, do you think that the ursoftware program will provide a superior functionality? Instalilng 3rd party software for that sort of purpose always makes me think twice.

I have followed both your 2nd and 3rd links, i had indeed missed a few steps - but have now completed both guides fully.

For some reason the C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\SCE\SetupSCE.exe is missing. I didn't delete it:(

DNadon,

I followed your instructions, reinstalling the EBS stuff with MMS.MSI. I also used your information to late the correct SCE installation files (coudn't find these prior, due to my own incompetetence!?). I am glad to have found these as i knew there must be a specific version for EBS.

OUTCOME:

Things are cleaner, SCE still wont install - for reference. The screenshot is as attached:)

Thanks a lot for the help, i guess it still - for reasons i can only guess at - wont work:(

Any more ideas?

Charles

Q. Are there special prerequisite considerations for running Essentials 2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2008?
A. Yes, SQL Server 2005 SP2 and IIS 7.0 must be installed on Windows Server 2008 before installing Essentials 2007 SP1. Only SQL Server 2005 SP2 is supported on Windows Server 2008. Install SQL Server 2005 SP2 before beginning Essentials 2007 SP1 setup, because SQL Server 2005 Express Edition cannot be installed by Essentials 2007 SP1 setup on Windows Server 2008.

Hi Charles,

As dstewartjr indicated in his post, SCE only works with SQL 2005.  I suspect that when you run the EBS installation wizard, it automatically installs SQL prior to running the SCE install.  Since you are not doing a re-install of EBS management server, you'll likely need to run the install for SQL manually before you do the SCE install.  I could not locate the SQL 2005 install files on the server.  Perhaps they are on the Management DVD.  The SQL 2005 install located in C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\SQLEXPR_SP2 is the SQL Server Studio Express 2005 with Advanced services.  This needs to be installed as well after SQL 2005 is installed, as it is used to manage the SQL configuration.

By the way, it is possible to re-install the Management server completely in a running EBS environment.  When I first installed EBS, I managed to destroy my NTDS (Active Directory) on the management server.  I re-installed while the messaging and security server were running and the installation was successful.  The wizards actually were intelligent enough to recognize that the management server had previously existed in the domain and the installation rebuilt the server based on the specs in Active Directory (from the messaging server) and re-activated the management server as the domain master.  Apparently this is a disaster recovery feature of EBS.  I fully expected to have to rebuild all the servers but I didn't have to in the end.  I think I had everything rebuilt and running in only 3 or 4 hours.  This happened about 7 months ago and although I expected a lot of problems after the fact, none have surfaced.

Dan.

Hi Dan,

I will install the SQL 2005 SP2, and then try to go ahead from there. I dont believe we will have the same luck with just reinstalling Management server. We had limited resources, and run MSG and SEC via HyperV on the management installation.

I know this is not supported, configuring the networking was mind boggling, and i still dont know if i have it right! happy to chat about that for 500 points if you want:)

I'll do some digging myself for that SQL 2005 SP2, i have already downloaded it, but would be handy to locate its package included in the original EBS installation files.

Thanks again for the help, Charles

Reinstalling the Management server as DNadon suggested was the only way to correct this problem effectively.

I'm curious to hear if you were able to get this fixed without re-installing the mamagement server.  I am in the same boat.  I did install SQL 2005 SP2 but during SCE07 setup I cannot specify where the sql instance is at.  The screenshot is similar to yours, with the exception of the exclamation marks. (I did have them before I installed SQL 2005 SP2)
