SBS or EBS without software firewall

Can SBS 2008 or EBS 2008 be installed and used without the Forefront (ISA) firewall server? I am installing as virtual machines on a ESXi host for evaluation host but web browsing performance is terrible with this software firewall as the network gateway. Using my Sonicwall firewall applicance does not slow Internet access or web browsing.
I assume that the tight integration of the packaged offerings might prevent bypassing the MS software firewall.
