Anyone help?

hi jason,

i think your question was too short to respond as you have not mentioned how many VMs you want  to backup what backup application you already have to back up the vms and what kind of media do  you want the backups to reside on.

please try to post as much information as possible so that someone can address your question specific to your requirements.

regards
bhanu

Its about 5 vm's on esxi server and there all on it's internal storage not a nas or San etc

I would like to back them up to another server not a tape etc

so any way possible? Maybe a script or something, obvously I can't see the internal drive by browsing via a share

hi jason,

sorry for the delay in responding back to you.  With regards to ESXi and backup of VMs there are multiple ways of backing up some simple tools like winscp to copy the files over and few free backup tools and also using custom scripts.

With regards to custom scripts  i think this is the best doc i came accross

http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760

related post which will help you configure from the above document.

not really helpful

by: bhanukir7Posted on 2009-08-16 at 02:13:33ID: 25108326

hi jason,

The reason why this is not very helpful is because of the limitations that are coupled with esxi.  I missed out on attaching this link

http://communities.vmware.com/message/1110839  which is what was mentioned in my last line of the post.

additonally you can try softwares from vizoncore which are provided with a 15 days free trial subsequent to which it will have a limited set of options but still will help you in getting backups compleated.

There are third party backup solutions like ca arcserve backup, backupexec which work along with VCB

bhanu
