Question

Upgrade HyperV host from Server Core 2008 to Full 2008 - Impact to existing VM?

Asked by: frukeus

I have a production server running a 64bit Server Core 2008 as the HyperV host with a VM running Windows 2008 32bit Full installation. The VM is also a one of the 2 DCs in my domain, it also running DFS service.
My other DC is on a separate machine.

I realised that I am facing a lot of limitations by running Server Core as the host. I cannot do NIC Teaming and found little support for qLogic iSCSI drivers. I feel that I should perhaps upgrade the HyperV host to a Full GUI Installation as there is much better support.

Can anyone foresee any problems if I do a fresh install? Will there be any problems bringing back the VM that runs the DC and DFS service after my fresh install of Full 2008? Any precautions that I should note? Thanks!

While still connected shut the VM down. Then export it. Then shut the Hyper-V host down. Then install Server 2008 Full x 64 with Hyper-V. Then create your virtual network and import the virtual machine. Bring it back up. No worries.

Precautions? I would take a full system backup from the Hyper-V host before starting, with the VM in a suspended state. I would keep that somewhere very safe.

The best thing about VMs is that they are mobile, so you could always move this VM to another Hyper-V machine temporarily to test out the DFS replication etc before you make the switch, but so long as you use the import/export options you will be fine. The only thing you need to be aware of is to make the change in a short window as computer accounts keep domain passwords and if the VM is offline for more than a few weeks it could become out of sync with the domain. And AD/DFS changes will need to replicate once the VM is back up, so your network might take a hit.

This process is actual easy. You just need to export your current VMs like Ado has said to store them on a USB drive or some external storage. Install Windows 2008 with Hyper-V then configure Hyper-v. Once you have done the configs you then Import the VMs you should have no problems.
