Question

Running MaC OS X as a virtual guest on MS Windows

Asked by: HenrikGarvner

Hi

We need to test our IIS based applications on MAC, that is to see if our app behaves as it should in the MAC browser. So I need to get a MAC envirorment up in some form.

Is there any way to run MAC OS X 10.6 as a virtual guest under Windows (XP, Server 2003/2008)?

I tried Sun Virtual Box with no luck, and read later that MAC OS is not supported as guest.

It cannot be done from windows without a lot of effort - have you heard of hackintosh?

I would be inclined to get yourself a cheap macintosh - either second hand or maybe a mac mini - that you can switch via a cheap KVM swicthbox into your existing keyboard/mouse and monitor.

I'd say its probably your best option and the easiest (cheapest).  I worked out what my time would cost to configure with hackintosh (possibly two days of messing about) and it would more than pay for a mac mini...

Running any Mac OS on anything other than Mac hardware is a violation of the Apple EULA. I agree with Roy Long's suggestion. Just make sure the Mac you get is recent enough to run OS  10.6. Probably your best solution is a Mac Mini, or use the excuse to treat yourself to a MacBook or MacBook Pro.

Actually, you do not need to have Mac OS X to test your web application in Mac OS X.
Users in Mac OS X usually use either Apple Safari, or sometimes Mozilla Firefox to browse the web, both of which are available in windows. If your application works in Safari, and Firefox, Mac users won't have a problem using your app.
To download Safari for windows, go to: http://www.apple.com/safari/

Unless of course your web app is using active x or other windows specific code.. ..different java version etc.. I have seen plenty of web apps function in firefox on windows and then crash and burn on firefox on macintosh.. ..you are right to want to test on macintosh as this is the only way to be sure..

..unless of course you are one of the rare breed of web developers who stick to the web standards to the letter?
