just to make sure. some of the sites under http://xportal/sites/ do not prompt for username and others do. right?
are you sure you get the prompt on the site itself and not on web parts inside it (maybe you have a web part that points to a different domain)?
also, do you get the prompt when browsing the site from a different client machine?
I have checked the web parts and assigned each web part appropriate permissions. I don't think there is any parts pointing to different domains but i'll check this.
I get the prompt also from other client machines.
What i've found now is if you go to tools/internet options/advanced and uncheck "enable integrated windows authentication (restart required)" and uncheck this, it doesn't prompt me anymore. However, I can't leave this unchecked because it affects other sites so therefore, I can't use this as a solution. I thnk it's something to do with kerberos but I can'tbe sure. Hope this helps
thanks
it's beyond me... sorry...

I suppose you are logged into the domain. Then check you IE settings: Tools->Internet Options->Security->custom level-> User Authentication->Check Automatic logon with current username and password.
