sharepoint copying data from excel into custom list in datasheet mode

Is there an easy way to copy and paste from excel or import data from excel into a custom list? I'm trying datasheet mode but it keeps telling me that the copy/paste area are not the same size no matter what I try. Datasheet mode is not true excel so I can't highlight more then 1 empty row and it won't insert empty rows. Columns match up between list and document.
