ActiveX Error When Trying to View List in Datasheet View

I am trying to view a sharepoint list in datasheet view. Since getting a new computer when I do this I get the error:
" The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows SharePoint Services is not installed, your browser does not support ActiveX controls, or support for ActiveX controls is disabled. "

Desktop Configuration:
Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2
Office 2003 Professional
I did not have any 2007 components installed when this problem started (see below)
IE7

Sharepoint Configuration:
Not sure, it's a hosted sharepoint service. If someone can tell me how to check on the version from within the sharepoint site I will check.

No other users at my company are having the same problem. I researching this issue I've seen that many people having this problem have Office 2007 products installed on their machine (see existing question/answer http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/MS-SharePoint/Q_22493847.html). However when I got this computer, I did not have any Office 2007 products installed. Since then, I have installed OneNote 2007, but the problem existed before this install.

So far to try to correct this problem I have:
- upgraded from IE6 to IE7 (7.0.5730.13)
- validated that ActiveX is working on other sites
- enabled all security settings related to ActiveX (tools/internet options/security/customer setting)
- cleared my cache
- tried using this view in Firefox with ietab plugin. Am able to open the view, but not edit any cells within it (it behaves like a standard view)
- created a new datasheet view. same problem.

I have also seen some troubleshooting tips for this problem requesting that verify the sharepoint worksheet plugin is installed, but I don't know how to do this.

I am managing all the requirements for the project I'm working on in this sharepiont list and *really* need to be able to use datasheet view. Thanks!Start Free Trial
