Sharepoint documents open as "read-only"

We have a sharepoint site that we access externally.
When trying to open a document, it only opens as read-only.
Using Vista, Office 2007, WSS 2.0

**but when opened in a XP machine, it works perfectly.
PS. Already tried the registry settings from microsoft, already tried the proxy, already have Vista SP1 installed, already tried repair install of Office and still not fixed.
