SharePoint - How to send Group Alerts?
Hi All,
In sharepoint (WSS) how do i send a group alert from an announcement etc?i've read somewhere you can enable "email security groups"?
that would be perfect if i could just email a security group from an announcement.

The way I would do this is to set up an email group in Exchange with the members that you want to be notified. You can then specify this group email address in the alerts you set up. I have never seen anything in WSS where a Sharepoint Group could be emailed, hence using email groups outside of Sharepoint to solve this.

i dont want to use distribution lists..it has to be all sharepoint.
i've seen an example on how to do it..but i believe its on an older version of WSS

thanks rich, i understand the concept of emailling a admin (or distribution) list if a change is made.
what im after is the ability to create an Announcement and send the alert to all users in a security group.

but like i said in my question, i believe this is an older version of WSS

You should be able to add your security group to the site alerts. what I did in the past is create a security group say SharePoint Admins then add your users in AD. Once you have your group built you add it to your alerts. Any alert will go to that security group in AD. Make sure you have outgoing email enabled.
This is not a distribution list and sharepoint will use the security group to send the email alerts to all persons in the group.
