SharePoint Top-Level Site

I've created a top level site successfully.  No errors in the event log.

However, I get page cannot be displayed when I go to it.  Example:  http://mike:1971

Is there something thatneeds to be done in IIS after the creation of a site?

Also, should I be using cname records or does SharePoint work with DNS?

Currently I have a Hosts file (it was recommened) 192.168.0.25  mysite   mike   ssp, however, it doesn't seem to be helping as I can't connect to these sites as well.
