Question

Error restoring a site from another SharePoint 2007 website

Asked by: TallerMike

So we have a backup of a SharePoint site that we got using the backup feature within SharePoint designer (Site -> Administration -> Backup Web Site...). When I try to restore the site onto our local server through SharePoint Designer (Site -> Administration -> Restore Web Site...), I get an error:

"Could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\f611fafc-73d8-4b48-bc1e-f9ef6d7cb991\Exportsettings.xml"

I searched the web, and found a number of articles stating that there is a bug restoring sites 25+ Megs, and this file does in fact meet those qualifications. I repeated the following steps from this website, which apear to be the solution:

http://farhanfaiz.wordpress.com/2008/02/06/moss-microsoft-office-sharepoint-designer-2007-restore-web-sites-error-exportsettingsxml/

However now I get a very generic error message. I've tried using the cabsdk to include or not include the original files with the same result. Maybe I'm doing it wrong though.

"Web site resore did not complete successfully"

Can anyone help me get this site restored onto our local servers? Is there some log or something I can turn on to find out why it didn't work?

Is the original site still available to be backed up?

:-)

by: TallerMikePosted on 2008-05-22 at 06:02:40ID: 21623383

No, I only have the original backup file.

I often see this problem when someone has applied manual customization to the site (like new web parts) without using Sharepoint Deployment Solutions.  Did your site have any customization?

by: TallerMikePosted on 2008-05-23 at 05:56:58ID: 21631618

Quite possibly, I didn't create the oroginal site, so I can't be sure. Is there anything I can do? Would importing through stsadmin be any better? Is there some log I can look at or anything to help determine the issue? Or am I just out of luck here?

by: Robbie_LeggettPosted on 2008-05-23 at 06:12:10ID: 21631755

If they are cmp files, you can use stsadm -o import and name the first .cmp file during the import.

:-)

I get the same old error like this:

"Could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\f611fafc-73d8-4b48-bc1e-f9ef6d7cb991\Exportsettings.xml"

by: tedbillyPosted on 2008-05-23 at 21:08:25ID: 21637827

Wait a minute.  stsadm has two sets of complimentary commands.  Backup/Restore OR Export/Import.  You can't Import a Backup and you can't Restore a Backup.  I'm wondering if that is your problem.

by: tedbillyPosted on 2008-05-23 at 21:08:53ID: 21637830

Sorry, there was a type, you can't Restore and Export.

by: TallerMikePosted on 2008-05-27 at 15:05:53ID: 21656162

Are there any other thoughts?

by: tedbillyPosted on 2008-05-27 at 15:07:51ID: 21656182

Did you mix a Backup with a Import? Or, did you mix up a Export with a Restore?  That would cause this problem.

by: Robbie_LeggettPosted on 2008-05-28 at 04:39:10ID: 21659464

It seems that this is not an uncommon problem, and without the original site, you are in a bit of trouble. Do you have any of the original SQL DB's? Or at least backups of the SQL DB's?

:-)

by: TallerMikePosted on 2008-05-28 at 07:25:27ID: 21660664

All I have is the CMP file, and I nolonger have access to the original site. That's why I'm trying to restore the backup file =) I figured a "backup" would be a safe option, but it seems restoring backups doesn't work so well.

If I did have access to the old site, what would I have needed to have done differently?

by: Robbie_LeggettPosted on 2008-05-28 at 07:49:47ID: 21660933

You should always have backups of the SQL DB's. You would also be better off using stsadm to backup your sites. It works far better than the SPD backup, although in essence they are one and the same.

:-)

Ah, I reread your message.  I assumed you used stsadm not Sharepoint Designer.  Robbie is correct, use stsadm and SQL backups.  Sharepoint Designer doesn't do a good job.

Robbie: I understand what you're saying, and deciding what to do with a question where the answer isn't exactly what I'm looking to hear isn't easy. All I can say for sure is that people here have been unable to help me import the file that I need. That doesn't mean that it is not possible to import the file still. I would agree however that you both deserve something for all the effort that you've put into your responses, because I do appreciate that. But I don't feel that any of the above should be selected as a resolution to the issue. I based that on the question I ask myself when I am in this position. If I hadn't posted the question, but was having the same problem, and I found this post, would I take the answer as the solution or would I keep looking. And in this case, I will keep looking.

by: Robbie_LeggettPosted on 2008-06-06 at 07:04:15ID: 21729136

Thanks for the reply Mike.

In this scenario, I am as certain as I can be from this distance, that you will be unable to restore the site from the file(s) you have. As far as I am concerned, this is a resolution to the issue. If you have any further data which can be used to help achieve the restore, then by all means keep the question open, but as it stands you have an answer.

I'm very sorry it isn't a positive answer, as it isn't the result anyone wants.

Good luck.

:-)

We're having a SharePoint vendor come in to do some work in the next couple of months. If they are unable to import the file, I will accept that as the solution. If they are able, I will post the resolution for importing the file.

I don't want to offend anyone by saying that I need a third opnion before I consider it truth, it's just too important to stop searching.

by: Robbie_LeggettPosted on 2008-06-06 at 08:14:52ID: 21729840

I absolutely agree. I hope they can find a solution. No offence taken.

:-)

by: tedbillyPosted on 2008-10-06 at 11:30:56ID: 22652934

The asker was told 'no' that isn't possible.  It appears that they did not have everything they needed to restore the backup.  I do not believe they should receive a refund.

by: TallerMikePosted on 2008-10-08 at 11:11:31ID: 22671503

Please leave it open. I'm still waiting for my second opinion from a hired vendor. We just haven't gotten to that item in the process yet. I will post the results of that once the vendor has concluded the issues is resolvable or not.

by: Robbie_LeggettPosted on 2008-10-09 at 06:30:25ID: 22678138

Sorry, I'm with Tedbilly on this one.

:-(

by: TallerMikePosted on 2008-11-20 at 08:17:53ID: 31460158

You can't always like answers in life, but you can always ask for a second opinion. In this case, the need was dropped before a second opinion came through. With that, I accept this comment based upon the information provided, same as the comment was based on the information I provided. Still hopeful that it's possible!
