Applying Custom Style Sheets to Master Pages

Hi Experts

I am new to CSS coding but am developing a sharepoint server that requires a "skin" and theme that matches our current corporate colours. I have created a basic master page and have looked at the core.css files in great detail and now know exactly what sections I need to update.

I have been advised NOT to modify the core.css file as this could cause problems in the future. I am trying to find the easiest and simpliest way to override the core.css attributes with my own styles and images.

Any advice on how to do this would be appreciated.

Specifically I need to know how to reference or link to my custom CSS file and where to place this reference/coding on the masterpage template so that it uses my CSS file before core.css.

I am running WSS 2007 and not MOSS 2007.

Thanks in advance experts!
