Hi,
I have developed an Intranet in ASP which holds a lot of company data and documents. The documents are stored physically with only the paths and file names stored in the database.
The company want to move to a Sharepoint platform for better Office integration and I have setup WSS3 which is working well. I have Designer 2007 installed on my laptop and can customise pages etc..
I am not sure whether to start from scratch with Sharepoint or to try and migrate the same Intranet functionality.
In the ASP Intranet, work opportunities are recorded and if successful clicking a link creates a contract with unique references and links the records in a relational database. Beyond this only finance staff have access to modify the contract details including a selection box listing all existing clients but allows new ones to be added also.
My options seem to be
1
create seperate ASP.NET pages with this functionality which would require coded login, session handling and accessing a seperate database.
Basically develop and ASP.NET site among the Sharepoint functionality.
2
Use lists to create flatfile database tables, forego some of the reporting capability and use Sharepoint as much as possible.
Not sure if there is a recommended limit on how many fields a list should have before performance may be effected?
If I go with Sharepoint functionality only, how do I link the users active directory login with the HR data held on the employee.
What I am after is advice on moving from an ASP intranet to Sharepoint - migrate or start over using Sharepoint features only. Which option is best and why.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
Jess
