Monitor file usage in sharepoint document library

I have just started using sharepoint services 3.0.  I have some PDF documents in a document library.  Is there an easy way to keep track of the number of times a file has been accessed from that library?

All I need is a simple "hit" count, but I am not familiar with sharepoints capabilities.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sharepoint has usage statistics that can be enabled that will show you basic usage information.

there is also content auditing that helps you monitor how documents are being used (or not used)

Only thing I can think of will audit everything in a Site Collection. I don't know of a way to do this for individual sites or document libraries.

In your website's homepage, navigate to "Site Actions>Site Settings>Modify all site settings"
Under "Site Collection Administration", click on "Site Collection Audit Settings"
With a series of check marks select what you want audited, then use the "Audit log reports" under "Site Collection Administration" to view your audit reports.

Try it out and see if this is what you need.
