I have been studying this quite a bit since you last asked that question. Forms Based Authentication (FBA) makes SO much sense in our environment! However, I've been told that I can't implement it until I find a workaround for the Office Integration piece.
Well...I might have found that workaround....Codeplex has a project on this very subject:

One of the goals of this CodePlex project is to take the credentials entered via FBA and port them over to the basic Windows Authentication (the type of authentication that Microsoft Office programs will accept). I haven't tested this out yet in my DEV environment; however, I definitely plan to.
I really hope that the next version of SP provides some options in this area. It's really annoying!
