How to enable Smart Client Authoring (editing a shared document directly from MS Word) under Forms Based Authentication mode?

Using WSS 3.0, I created 2 web applications: Website A uses Forms Based Authentication, and Website B uses Windows authentication.

In website B (windows authentication), when I open a document in 'Shared Documents' document library, it opens that document directly from the server, and whatever changes I make and save in the document, get uploaded to the server. Great.

But in website A (forms authentication), the above does not work. When I open the document, it actually gets downloaded to the temp directory, which means any changes I make are essentially on the local copy, which is not really useful.

My question is, can I somehow enable Smart client authoring (the scenario with website B) when using forms based authentication?

Argh....this is a really sore subject for me....

We want to enable Forms Based authenication in our workplace....however, there are too many drawbacks.  One drawback in particular is the lack of Office Integration.

Take a peek at this Microsoft article that compares Windows authentication to FBA:

I have been studying this quite a bit since you last asked that question.   Forms Based Authentication (FBA) makes SO much sense in our environment!  However, I've been told that I can't implement it until I find a workaround for the Office Integration piece.

Well...I might have found that workaround....Codeplex has a project on this very subject:

One of the goals of this CodePlex project is to take the credentials entered via FBA and port them over to the basic Windows Authentication (the type of authentication that Microsoft Office programs will accept).  I haven't tested this out yet in my DEV environment; however, I definitely plan to.

I really hope that the next version of SP provides some options in this area.  It's really annoying!

Found the solution. Really easy.

Use Forms Based Authentication, force a persistent cookie and enable client integration at the web application level.

That will solve the problem.
