We use Sharepoint 2003 as an extranet. It's hosted within our own building, sat behind a firewall and we're running it using IIS6. External users access it via
www.mysite.org and they're prompted for username/password before they get access to the site. Currently directory security is set at Basic Authentication.
While most users can access the site without a problem, two organisations have constant problems. They get to the site but then they're not prompted for username/credentials, the page remains blank; they are prompted for credentials but after completing the boxes the connection hangs for several minutes and then times out; they enter credentials and get into the site but then navigation through the site is painfully slow and sometimes times out or just grinds to a halt.
On other occasions, the same users get straight in with no complications. Both problem organisations are sat behind their own corporate firewalls.
When I look at the traffic from the problem organisations I see their failed connection attempts sometimes bring up the message :
Error 401.1
You are not authorized to view this page
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied because your Web browser is sending a WWW-Authenticate header field that the Web server is not configured to accept.\r\n
We have tried changing the directory security to Integrated Windows but this then blocks a lot more users gaining access to the site. We appreciate Basic isn't the best setting but it's causing the least problems at the moment.
Sorry for the long post but if anyone could shed some light on the problem I'd be very grateful
