The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Find the correct path to the SharePoint 2007 log directory on a Virtual Server?

Asked by vrbancic in MOSS-Sharepoint, .NET, Microsoft Virtual Server

Hi,

I have written a Web Part (C#.Net 2.0) which is to be run under SharePoint 2007 which is running on a Virtual Server.  The Web part will read and parse the SharePoint logs to extract recent usage information to be displayed.  The code was developed on a Windows Server 2003 server running on a Virtual PC.  The code works perfectly on my development server, locating the log, parsing the data and displaying the information I desire.  When I publish the Web Part to my client's production server the Web Part reports that it is unable to locate the log file.  I have used Windows Explorer to manually locate the log files and all of my information in the path is correct.  However, in the application I have hard-coded the path to the log file; "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\LOGS\aa16ad2f-838c-4ec4-9201-885044a2c0c8\2008-10-07\09.log".  This is the exact location of the SharePoint log.  I have mimiced the exact location on my development server and the app finds the file every time.  I know that there must be a better way to try and locate this directory, something like //virtual-server-name/ or http://virtual-server-name/ but I just can't get the syntax correct.

Can you help?

Thanks much!
