Question

What happens when I uninstall MOSS 2007 from a server that has both MOSS 2007 and WSS 3.0?

Asked by: AnotherAlias

Our company has upgraded over the years from Sharepoint Team Services all the way to MOSS 2007.  Our use of Sharepoint has decreased as our company has decreased in size.  With our upcoming Microsoft Partnership renewal coming up we are looking at what we can save money on, and MOSS 2007 seems like something we can do without.  WSS 3.0 seems to do everything we need and is of course free.  Nobody uses the business rules, workflows, and other benefits of MOSS 2007.  My question is, how do I go about uninstalling MOSS 2007?  What happens to my existing sites?  I am going to keep everything on the existing Windows 2003 Server machine, but I have no idea where to start with this.  Any help would be appreciated.

I would say that anything using a MOSS 2007 feature is not going to work.

So any site created from a MOSS only site template is doomed, and would probably need to be removed.

However, if you pretty much created team sites, then you should be okay. You will still have a lot of manual effort. As even team sites created in MOSS, have features that won't be available in WSS only.

I would recommend using the following application to start removing those features from sites based on templates available in WSS only.

Faulty Feature Tool (http://www.moss2007.be/blogs/vandest/archive/2008/04/28/stsadm-o-export-fatalerror-failed-to-compare-two-elements-in-the-array.aspx)

When everything is cleaned up you could try a content database backup/restore/attach to a new WSS only environment. Worst case scenario is that you would need to do STSADM Export/Imports (bright side: Gives you an excuse to clean up unused content).

Good luck!

hello
you will have uninstall MOSS and WSS3.0 both
and install WSS3.0 and then create the new web application and attach the database to the new web application

More than that Sunil... You'll end up with errors all over the place when it can't find the MOSS features.

hello
i agree with with you and this will purely depend on the template used for creating the web application .
if template used is not available with the WSS3.0 then you will not be able to browse the web application

Sunil

And futher...

The Team Site template in MOSS does not equal the Team Site template in WSS. I'm using that as one example... there are many more. The main difference between the same site template on the two platforms, is the features that are activated.
