ok... so months ago before I worked here my company buys a new server and sharepoint 2007. They task the local linux geek with building it, which he does, then it sits there. He keeps saying linux can do this far better so why use this. Now he is gone and they are saying we bought it, lets use it (can't argue with that).
so...me, being a total newb with webapps and not having a clue about sharepoint other than a rough understanding of what it does, am going to try setting this up... this will probably be really easy to answer for anyone thats set one up before.
sharepoint is already all installed and I added the server to the domain. The checklist is telling me to setup incoming and outgoing e-mail settings first. we have an exchange server though... so I'm not certain if I should be doing this or telling it to use the exhange server somehow. The options it gives me are just vague enough to leave me wondering and so I am asking for guidance. suggestions please?

I dont see an area where that seems like it should go. I'm in the incoming email setup... I noticed that it is automatically choosing "advanced" and automatic isnt an option... I assume this is because I dont have SMTP installed atm. Do I need SMTP installed even though I plan to use a different server? Am I in the completely wrong place? I got there fromt he setup checklist.
Sorry I forgot one little bit as you just found out, You iwll need to installl SMTP on your server and then add you HSarepoint server ass the incomming SMTP server and your Exchange server as the outgoing!

Jsut add the Exchange box Hostname or IP or FQDN..
Exchange.yourdomain.com
this is so Alerts can be sent and other items can be uploaded via exchange its real cool. I was in your shoes a few years ago.
