Environment: Server 2008, MOSS SP1 (64bit) All hotfixes through December applied. SQL is on remote server. Single MOSS server, Single SQL Server. Farm has been running just fine up until the application of the December 9th MS KB956716 patch.
Removed content DB's for all sites from MOSS.
Verified no stuck/failed timer jobs.
Installed the MS KB956716 patch for 64-bit MOSS 2007 SP1. Install completed no errors.
Prompted to run SP Config Wizard.
Config wizard fails step 8 of 9. The Upgrade log is pasted below.

Found extensive corruption in the file system, coincidentally in the files contained in the patch itself.... Blew away the farm and rebuilt. Good thing I use scripts to build it. It does not appear that Microsoft tested this patch on a Server 2008 infrastructure. Multiple 2008 implementations failed, but all of the 2003 implementations went just fine. It's great being a suprise beta-tester for patches....

It is giving Access Denied errors. Can you confirm your account (the one being used to apply the hotfix) has farm-admin and site-collection admin permissions? Can you confirm that neither your account, nor any of the service accounts, are locked out (Active Directory)?
