deleted sql 2005 to install 2008 on sbs 2008 - server broke - help please

Hi,

feel rather stupid about this. OS is sbs2008 premium - but for some reason os setup automatically installed sql 2005 express. As the SBS 2008 came with sql 2008 I tried upgrading 2005 to 2008 using that option - did not appear to work. So in a moment of stupidity I uninstalled sql 2005 and the 3 instances of sql 2005 (sharepoint, mssql server, and scan mail (part of Trend Micro) I guess ... thinking that I could install sql 2008 and reinstall the instances again.

Well ... the result is that:
1) companyweb/sharepoint is now broken
2) monitoring and reporting is now broken
3) trend micro worry free security appears to be operating ok and therefore not sure what Scan Mail instance was all about.

Apparently there is a distinct lack of sbs 2008 support for snything out of the ordinary from MS - and can't find anywhere online with a explanation as to exactly how to restore/reinstall sharpoint services for sbs2008, or even to explain what sbs 2008 disk 2 component services is all about ... or even how to use it.

I am hoping that someone will be able to offer some assistance to answer the following:
1) is this situation recoverable or do I need a complete reinstall (having discovered that sbs2008 does not have the repair/install option that 2003 had)
2) if it is recoverable what would I need to do

Almost midnight here now ... off to bed and back again in 6-7 hours to check for responses (hopefully)

Thanks in anticipation of your assistance
James

thanks for your response ... this subject has been tracking along in the ms sbs community bb.

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=&cr=&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs&p=1&tid=c5c367c0-50a8-49b8-b423-2a7d426c1d0e&mid=67590ed2-439f-4f6b-b6b4-ca4baacaba9d

As yet Microsoft have not released the instructions on how to use this disk. So ... In order to reinstall sharepoint services I looked closer at the SBS 2008 disk 2 - and discovered that at root level there is a folder named CMPNENTS which contains exe files for repair/installing the following: 32 bit fax drivers; ASP; Exchange; FSS (Forefront) plus also has an application called "resetclientSID"; One Care; SQL Hotfix; SQL Express SP2; WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0); and WSUS

So ... with SBS 2008 running, I inserted the sbs 2008 disk 2 media and ran the exe for WSS ... chose the repair option and it appears to have worked. The repair process also prompts to restart then run the "Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard" to complete configuration. Looks like
this wiz can be found in Start > Administration Tools. This crashed mind you ... got access error ... but it appears to have fixed companyweb anyways.

The next issue to tackle was the uninstall I did of sql 2005 .... I discovered (courtesy of an MS MVP) that sbs 2008 moitoring/reporting is not supported on sql 2008 ?!! Action -> uninstall sql 2008 and REinstall sql 2005 to get server functioning again.

The end result of all of this is that despite upgrading to sql 2008, we (as sbs 2008 users) still have to run sql 2005 to support SBS reporting...  ie if you want to run sql 2008 on sbs 2008 you can't yet do away with sql 2005.

Nice one Microsoft :)

thanks ... turns out this is a small part of a much bigger issue ... have reposted to try and sort out whole mess
