Question

MOSS: Slow response when adding users to SharePoint groups or assign action items

Asked by: Driesvdc

We implemented MOSS 2007 for a customer which is a subsidiary in a global multinational  group of  companies. Our customer has about 200 users, and the group has about 50,000 Active Directory users worldwide.

When one adds a user from AD to a SharePoint group, or assign a task to a user, and one does it by using the search dialog provided by SharePoint, it takes up to 10 minutes to return a result. When one types in the users login credentials directly, using the "domain\login name" format, SharePoint resolves the account almost immediately. However, this method is not practical in the case of our customer, since they use a an 8-digit employee number as login name, and generally users only know their own employee numbers, and therefore must rely on search to find co-workers' accounts

I would like to know whether this is a known issue at other installations, and whether there is a fix  or a workaround available

Sharepoint is very sensitive to the performance of Domain Controllers and yes it can take a LONG time to do this unless you configure profile import which preloads all the users into the Sharepoint databases and avoids the latency of querying the domain controllers.

As told by tedbilly SharePoint is very sensitive to performance of DC specially when your farm and your DC are in different network zones.

If your farm configuration has this typology please be sure that your all required ports are opened on your firewall specially the Global Catalog port (3268 on TCP) wich allows you to perform searchs on your AD.

If I have  done a full import of users why would it still be slow? Also for Sigmathaar, if port 3268 was not opened on the firewall wouldn't it just not work or would sharepoint seek out other ports?
