Question

using stsadm to backup sharepoint 2007

Hi

I am using this command to perform a full backup of my SP server
stsadm.exe -o backup -directory "\\directory path" -backupmethod full

This works, but when I put the -overwrite switch in at the end of script it won't overwrite the previous backup. Can anyone help?

Overwrite only works with -filename, it doesn't work with -directory.

This is not at all clear in the documentation!

Marco on http://blog.wauwwie.nl/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=4 has written a Backup retention script to delete backups older than X days (5 in the ex.). Marco's script also update the spbrtoc.xml file.

Is there a way to do a complete backup to a filename?

stsadm -o backup -url <URL of the site collection> -filename <name of the backup file>

 

This command only backs up a site and not the entire sharepoint.

The filename switch is for Site Collection backup. You do need to use Directory for backing up everything.

So when I backup using directory there is no way to overwrite the file?

Not using the STSADM syntax. You could look at the script detailed by NicolasQuenard above.
