adding password to document causes metadata loss

Hi,
I've ran into this weird problem:
if I apply a password to an Excel 2007 document in SharePoint doc lib (Office button, Prepare, encrypt Document) or upload to SharePoint a password protected document, the metadata of that document get lost!
And you cannot check in the document anymore, receiving the error:
File could not be checked in because the original version of the file on the server was moved or deleted a new version of this file has been saved to the server...

I tested this behavior several times and realized that it happens only when a password is used to protect the document.
If you upload the password protected document is fine, metadata are there, but as soon as you try to modify it, check out works, but check in never works again. If you discard check out you will see that the metadata on sharepoint are gone.

Anybody had this problem? could anyone test it?
I did not manage to find anything about it on the web.

Hi I have seen this happening before. Just out of interest why do you put a password on a document that lives in SharePoint? Whey don't you use SharePoint security to give or take away access?

This is a known issue.  The metadata is actually stored within the document and gets read into SharePoint when being saved.  Unfortunately, since the document is password protected, SharePoint cannot read the metadata values and therefore you lose them.

Hi,
the password was an additional security measure to the sharepoint permission, but we can probably live with that.
It is interesting to understand why the metadata get lost.
