Question

Use connection string in web.config file for making connection for SharePoint dataview

Asked by: tallfiji

I have modified my SharePoint web.config file to store connectionStrings and the system doesn't crash.  Now how do I reference the connecitonString name in my SharePoint page that uses the dataview webpart?  Any help is appreciated.  I assume I have to change the code below to recieve the name.  I'm just not sure how to refrence it.

<DataSources>
<SharePoint:SPSqlDataSource runat="server" AllowIntegratedSecurity="False" ConnectionString="Data Source=xxx;User ID=xxxx;Password=xxxx;Initial Catalog=Hotel_IT_Blueprint;" ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient" SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [qryImplementation_Overview]" ID="SqlDataSource5"></SharePoint:SPSqlDataSource>
</DataSources>

I understand what this is saying but I could use a little more help with this.  Do I need to create code behind and put this next to my .aspx page in SharePoint designer?  Do I add code to the .aspx page?  What code would I add?  How do I think refrence that data connection I established with the code?

What this says is you have the connection string in web.config.You can access this connections string in the web part like this

http://www.simple-talk.com/dotnet/asp.net/web-parts-in-asp.net-2.0/

Check this part in that

lso notice the defaultProvider attribute in the <personalization> element of the web.config. This tells ASP.NET which provider configuration to use as a default if a provider configuration is not explicitly specified in the Web Part Manager. In the example above, it is set to AspNetSqlPersonalizationProvider. This is the default built-in provider configuration for ASP.NET that uses the ASPNETDB.mdf file in the APP_DATA directory of your web application to store Web Parts settings. If you only want to use the MyMultiPageProvider by default in your application, then you can set it as the default provider:

<configuration>
       ...
       <system.web>
       ...
       <webParts>
       <personalization defaultProvider="MyMultiPageProvider">
       <providers>
       <add connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer" groupName="MyGroupKey"
       name="MyMultiPageProvider"
       type="Providers.MultiPageSqlPersonalizationProvider" />
       </providers>
       </personalization>
       </webParts>
       </system.web>
 </configuration>

If you specify the MyMultiPageProvider as the default provider configuration, then you do not have to explicitly specify it as the provider configuration in the Web Part Manager. But in case you want to leave the default as AspNetSqlPersonalizationProvider, I'll cover how to setup the Web Part Manager next.

Configuring the Web Parts manager to use a specific provider configuration

Every page that contains Web Parts must have one (and only one) WebPartManager control to manage the storage, retrieval, and interaction of Web Parts. When you first place a WebPartManager on a page or a Master Page, the control definition looks similar to this:

<asp:WebPartManager runat="server" ID="wpManager" />

Since there the control is not being explicitly told which provider configuration to use, it uses the default configuration specified in the web.config.

If you want to use a specific provider configuration, then you have to tell the control which provider configuration to use. You do this by passing in the unique name of the provider configuration to the control, as follows:

<asp:WebPartManager runat="server" ID="wpManager">
       <Personalization ProviderName="MyMultiPageProvider" />
</asp:WebPartManager>

Now that you can configure the WebPartsManager to use the MultiPageSqlPersonalizationProvider, you can embed your Web Parts logic into a Master Page and easily share Web Parts over multiple pages.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I understand this.  I went to the SharePoint web.config and looked for what you are refrencing and couldn't find it.  I'm using the SharePoint dataview.  RIght now I have allowed my SharePoint site pages to execute code and now I just need to set the DataSource ConnectionString to a value that is retrieved from somewhere... preferably the web.config for SharePoint.  The code below shows my futile attempt at achieving this.

I have read through what you sent and appreciate the work you put into this, I'm just not sure this is the right route for what I'm trying to do.

ReqDS.ConnectionString = "Data Source=vs-spsdev;User ID=HRI_Blueprint;Password=Welcome01;Initial Catalog=Hotel_IT_Blueprint;";
