It would be my recommendation to start at Microsoft's SharePoint developer website:

You don't want ot use VS2008

You want ot use SharePoint Designer.  Why?  because it was developed just for developing in Sharepoint.  It works a little nicer than Visual Studio.

There are also a TON of help videos on SharePoint Designer which will get you started developing in SharePoint.

Visual Studio 2008 is a tool and so is SharePoint Designer. Pick the right tool for the right job.

I have a problem, im trying to use Visual Studio 2008, but my problem is i dont see where to create a webpart, under the menus, that on the list of components i can create there is no sharepoint and so cant create a webpart. I have tried installing sharepoint services 3.0 but there is an error message that i have to install Windows Server 2003 service Pack1, but im using a machine on XP.
Would you know what the problem is here.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with Hwkranger's suggestion.

Don't get me wrong, SPD is a GREAT place to start customising your SharePoint sites and pages, altering look and feel etc, creating basic workflows and it can be very helpful in getting to grips with some of the basic elements that make up a SharePoint application.

But it also has significant drawbacks and limitations. For example you can't write any server-side code in SPD - for that you need VS. There are a whole host of reasons why you'd want to use VS, but I'd say SPD is a good place to start until you hit one of its limits. By that point hopefully you'll be ready to face the greater challenge of VS.

I would also highly recommend this link, which contains videos and explanations of the very basic concepts of development, and a few "my first application" type demos.

Dawie,

As for requiring WSS, you need to do your .NET development on a Windows 2003 Server running WSS 3.0 unless you only want to talk to SharePoint via it's web services.

If you want object model access, then developing on a Windows 2003 Server is the way to go.

I am a firm believer that if you are going to do any hard core development you will probably need to use both Visual Studio and SharePoint Designer. I tend to use SPD for all of my basic development, but rely heavily on VS for major projects.

My suggestion for you is to make sure you are fully trained and understand how to customize SharePoint pages before you begin. There are a number of things that you need to be aware of otherwise you could break your page for good.

Tip #1:
Always make a copy of the page before you customize it - that way you have something to roll back to if need be!

Tip#2:
If adding a custom list form to a DispForm.aspx, EditForm.aspx, or NewForm.aspx be sure to only hide the OOTB form then add the new form at the bottom. If you remove the OOTB form it is likely that you will end up with a corrupted page.
