Question

Error getting while doing SharePoint Backup using stsadm tool

Dear All,

I'm using WSS 3.0 with WID (WSS 3.0 Basic Mode of installation).

From past few days I'm getting one problem that, one of my backup process giving "Cannot complete this action" Error Message. I'm doing this operation through stsadm.exe tool. I was done the backup through SQL Server Management Studio Express and it is giving Successful message. So I restored this backup in another server, It's telling that the restoration process is completed successfully. But If I open that Site, I unable to see any data, not only that the perticular Site collection is removing from Central admin.

Any help .... Please...

Thanks,
Rao.

If you can't see the site, it's not surprising that the backup is failing. So you need to fix the site first, then deal with any stsadm backup problems first.

When you performed the SQL restore, did you give the restored db the same name as the original? I've never tried to do this specific operation so not sure what the impact is. It may be that SharePoint just doesn't recognise the restored database. Try detaching and re-attaching the database in Central Administration > Application Management > Content Databases

When you try to access the site, do you get any errors in the ULS logs?

AS far as I know you cant use Studio to backup Express DB.. what i read was you need to use Stsadm.exe. I agree if the site is not working the backup will fail.. I did have the same issue that my site didnt show up. But after running the correct backup strategy everything worked wonderfully.. perhaps explain a little more of your issue..

Cheers

I have three web applications. one for Intranet , one for Customer Support, and another one for data collaboration.

I used stsadm.exe tool to take my backup of Customer Support site which is having 446 MB of data only. If I try to backup that database then at certain time I'm getting

Cannot Complete this action

Please try again.

This problem is occuring for DataCollaboration site also.

Any Suggestions please.

Thanks.

1) Go to Central Admin
2) Application Management
3) Click Content Databases
4) In the Web Application drop-down box, select your web application
5) Look at the list of content databases. Is your restored database in their? If not, click Add a Content Database, enter the SQL server name, database name, and other details.

If the database is already there consider detaching and re-attaching it, this may be necessary after doing a SQL restore, I'm not sure.
