Can Sharepoint Services Be Used for Public Helpdesk Solution?

Hi All,

I use Sharepoint Services for many things around the office, and I like their IT and Helpdesk templates - very useful. My question - can plain old Sharepoint Services 3.0 be used as a public helpdesk application for customers, so that it can be configured to accept and process incoming support emails, and then assign those emails, based on the header information, to different support users? Also, could I then configure the Sharepoint system to send out reply emails when the support employee processes each helpdesk ticket?

Keep in mind I'm talking about Sharepoint Services - not Sharepoint Office Server - our company doesn't want to purchase that.

Yes but you must have External Connector License for Your windows server. I suggest to use single server scenario with Windows Internal Database to save SQL server cost.

Thank you - we will certainly license the server appropriately. What I am really asking about is the workflow capability of Sharepoint Services as opposed to Sharepoint Office Server (or whatever the paid-for version is called today). Is it feasable to process incoming email and assign those emails to users, and then forward a copy of those incoming emails to the appropriate support person, using the workflows of Sharepoint Services?

Andornagy....
server topology should not be based on cost.  it should be based on expected load.  you'll find yourself in a world of trouble if you use single server with WSS & WID on a site that has more than minimal traffic.

Totally agree with zephyr here, you need to go through a capacity planning exercise and not base this on cost alone, especially when it's client/public facing.

to address your specific question:

Yes.  WSS can be configured to accepting incoming email, and send email alerts.  you can also create workflows using Sharepoint Designer that handle things like emailing an alert to a specific user.

why not give WSS a try in a virtual environment and see how workflows are created, etc?
MS provides a virtual WSS that's all ready to go...  a big time-saver over having to set everything up yourself for testing.
