3 ways
1. use internal domain accounts and reverse proxy or the extranet topologies
2. use forms based authentication
3. setup an active directory in your dmz and use that one to authenticate your external users (best solution imho, but might be a bit overhead for you)
First of all, you need a DMZ Zone, so if you are keeping your SharePoint in your local lan, then it ends here as you should never keep it in your local LAN if you want to expose it to externals. That is my personal opinion, but the architecture exists, it's called Edged Firewall Topology and it uses reverse proxy to get to your SharePoint. This involves adding external people to your internal Active Directory though.
You should opt for a more advanced topology where you put your MOSS environment in your DMZ to be safe.
To get an idea of extranet topologies, there is a very nice article on technet.
