Sharepoint: Get List field 'ID' in Javascript

In a sharepoint List item edit form, if the ID field is not a visible field, how do you get the value of the built in field ID (@ID) into a javascript function that is run OnLoad.

In other words, how do I get my javascript function to find the listitem's ID, when the form loads.

I think the only way is to get it from the URL/query string i.e http://domain/lists/mylist/EditForm.aspx?ID=123&Source=blah. It's a bit of a pain but there's plenty of info out there on how to parse the query string in Javascript (e.g. http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/20020107.asp)
