I think the only way is to get it from the URL/query string i.e http://domain/lists/mylist /EditForm. aspx?ID=12 3&Source=b lah. It's a bit of a pain but there's plenty of info out there on how to parse the query string in Javascript (e.g. http://www.eggheadcafe.com /articles/ 20020107.a sp)
