How do I allow for a SharePoint site to use an additional http header

I am using Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0) and have the primary site set as htpp://intranet. This works fine and I have no problems. However users at our corporate location (and others) cannot use that name to access our site ('website cannot be found.'). They need to use the fully qualified name (and that cannot be changed) of http://intranet.mysubcompany.com. However, the IIS site is only looking for traffic with the header of http://intranet and not http://intranet.mysubcompany.com. What can I do to allow for the ADDITIONAL header for that one site. I know how to add the host header in IIS, but that does not seem to be working and I believe I need to do something in SharePoint Central (I am the only Admin)
