Documents on sharepoint 2007 opens in read only with office 2010

After deploying office 2010 my users can no longer modify existing files on sharepoint as the documents opens as read only. They have to save it locally, do the required changes and the re-upload the file and overwrite the existing one on sharepoint. Users still with office 2007 do not experience this problem and can modify and save existing documents directly from sharepoint.

one possible solution is to enable the browser file handling under web application settings from strict to permissive

The browser file handling option is not available under Web Application General Settings on the central server of sharepoint 2007 but is available in sharepoint 2010. Is it located elsewhre in sharepoint 2007?
the suggested solution in both links i provided is to change IE settings...

I've had a look at IE settings settings but can't seem to find the browser file handling option. Can you be more specific to the location of this  in IE.

In short, the solution is to make a fake proxy in IE:

Open up Internet Explorer
Click Tools –> Internet Options
Click the Connections tab
Click LAN settings
Check “Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections).”
Enter 127.0.0.1 for the address
Click Advanced
In the Exceptions type: *.*
Click OK, OK and OK

Hi Zephyr_hex,

The fake proxy setting does not work. I had already tried this solution from a blog previously and it did not change anything. Other solution said to disable protected mode in the trust center settings in office did not work either. Another one said to add the value OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing = 1 in registry but still no joy.
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Internet\OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing = 1
