SharePoint - Changing from one domain to another

Hi there,

Our entire office is moving to a new building.  This new building will merge two companies, each with their own AD domain.  In order to start fresh, we are implementing a new domain, with new services (Exchange 2010, BES 5.0, Domain Services, etc.).  We currently have a SharePoint 2007 (Version: 12.0.0.6020) that we want to keep, but we want it to become a member of this new domain.

What are the easiest steps we need to do to get this done?

The SharePoint server is currently a VM, can we make changes and if it doesn't work, can we restore a backup of the VM?

In this new domain set up, we will be upgrading our SQL Server from 2005 to 2008 Standard R2.  Would you recommend we keep the SharePoint database on SQL Server 2005 or is it easy to migrate the DB to SQL Server 2008?

Thank you,
- Christian

These are quite some changes! If it were me I would consider a fresh install of sharepoint with SQL 2008 in your new environment and then attach your content databases.

Thank you!  We are going to upgrade to SharePoint 2010 sometime next year, but because we have so much to do before we move and migrate users to the new domain, we want to make it easier on us and keep the same SharePoint site/version.

Do you have instructions on how to do a fresh install on a new domain and then transfer the content databases?

Thank you, it doesn't sound too hard.  Would the following instructions I found online explain exactly what you would or have done in the past?

Hi,

yes, indeed the procedure is well written and a good point to start. Just be sure about your backup and accounts to be migratd, and everything should be fine.

Good luck!
Thank you!

- So I'll do a simple backup of every database and their log files.  How many databases do I need to migrate over for WSS 3.0?

- Since this is a new domain, I will create new accounts to work with WSS.  I know I'll need a SharepointAdmin and sharepointDatabase user account because that is what is currently created under SQL Server 2005 server.  Any other user accounts that I'll need to worry about?

- Anything specific to consider since I am copying the databases to SQL Server 2008 R2?

Thanks again!

Consider to open a new question for that.. I can only guess since I haven't been using WSS 3 for many years now... and I don't like to guess...

Speaking about MSSQL 2005 not really, but please have a look to your documentation just in case.

There's an interesting tutorial that I'd follow on:
tutorial on SQL migration
Have a look!
We will not be migrating to a new domain anymore so we won't need this solved.  Thank you for your answers though!

Dear,

since the explanations and instructions given could be used in case you will migrate sooner or later, please consider to assign points in any case. It will also be useful for other EE users to see this request solved and to apply, consequently, the same procedures.

Kind regards
