Sharepoint site to replace FTP server

Looking to replace an FTP server (running on IIS) with a sharepoint server for easier end-user access. Super simple with its own db for users/passwords, no AD or LDAP or anything fancy. Just want to have 10 users be able to login and download or upload files with read only permissions, dont want them to be able to overwrite/rename/delete - just download and upload.
Are there templates for this kind of thing or does it need to be all custom development?
Can I use the free sharepoint service or does that exist anymore?
Thanks for any direction on how I could go about setting this up.

Do you already have the edition of SharePoint that comes with SBS2008 up and running?

Have you already tried setting up a document library with one of the default templates? It's been a while since I've tried to customize permissions, but it sounds like something SharePoint Services can handle (or at least mostly handle) right out of the box?

Is there some particular reason you wanted to use SharePoint? Since it doesn't sound like you are trying to do any integration or tie in other SharePoint features, a web-based FTP client/portal (that you install in IIS) to access your existing FTP site may be easier for your users* and more precisely fit your needs.

*Even the basic edition of SharePoint contains "extra" things that could confuse users.

No reason for sharepoint...What would be some web-based ftp client/portals you know of?

With the default ftp server there is no "log off" button or anything like that so thats a pain to have to clear cookies to log out (im guessing a reboot might also work)...
