The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Installing Exchange 2007 and ISA 2006 on same OS installation/physical machine?

Asked by Pugglewuggle in MS Forefront-ISA, Exchange Email Server, Hypervisor

Tags: , ,

Hi, I've got a couple of questions about a secure way of going about this... Just letting you know in advance this is a deep one. Please try to answer everything you can! :-)

I've got a few OS's and I'm trying to consolidate MS servers into a) the same physical machines, and b) into the same host OS's (if possible and secure).

1) Is it possible to install ISA 2006 and Exchange 2007 on the same OS and have a secure/stable setup. If you frown upon this, what is your recommendation?

2) I am thinking about deploying Windows Server 2008 Standard (64-bit) as a web server in our DMZ... Is it wise/secure/reasonable to create VMs in Hyper-V for Exchange and ISA? Is this a bad idea? If it can work, what are your recommendations on securing it? If it will not work/is a terrible idea, how would you do it?

3) If I do go with the 2008 machine and VMs, does it create an unnecessary threat to the machines because of ISA and Exchange running on VMs instead of seperate physical machines? Does the fact that the Host OS for the two Hyper-V VMs will be a web server create a security threat?

4) Would it be better to install ISA on the base Windows Server 2008 installation (is it more secure this way?) and setup Exchange in a VM?

5) Can IIS reside on the Windows Server 2008 installation along with ISA and serve web content without compromising the hardness of the ISA server? I'm really looking to leverage the new features of IIS 7 on WS 2008 if possible.

I appreciate any input or advice you can offer! Thanks!Start Free Trial
