OCS 2007 + Communicator + Logitech AF Webcam: How to get smoother/higher quality video?

Asked by Nitz_Walsh in MS Live Communications Server, Computer Web Cameras

I have OCS 2007 setup in a test environment.  The server itself is running off a Hyper-V on a 2008 host with Xeon Quad-core and 8GB, connected to the LAN via 1 GB.

The two PC's I'm testing with are both dual-core (min 1.8ghz), and both have Logitech's newest Auto-focus webcames with the Carl Zeiss lens, excellent quality with the Logitech webcam app as well as the latest Skype release.  Even on our congested 4mbit pipe from the office, I can get near 640x480x30fps with Skype.

With Office Communicator 2007 however, it's much worse.  15fps seems to be the max, along with considerable artifacting.  It does not appear than OCS or Communicator offer any options to set a defined bitrate and bandwidth ceiling, I really shouldn't have to resort to a specialized videoconference camera like something like Tandberg or Polycom to get better quality than this.

Anything I can do?  Bandwidth is not a problem, both of these machines are on a 1GB lan - there's no reason for Skype to vastly outperform it when it's going through a connection that's monumentally slower with far more latency.Start Free Trial
