Turns out that thsi doesn't meet my requirements. What I wanted was for a completely web based conference system, but it seems you only get that if you subscribe to Microsoft's hosted Live Meeting sstem, which seems a bit crap to me. That's leaves me in the situation where any outside person needing to connect into a conference still needs the Live Meeting client...not what I wanted at all. Never mind.

I've got an update of sorts for this...
I have 3 environments for this: dev, pre-production, and production. My orignal problem appears in dev. Given my time restraints, I had to move it to pre production as it's a more live-like environment, and I thought that perhaps my issues were environmental. However the same issue has appeared in pre production too, with one more quirk, which is that for some reason the banner picture isn't showing, even though the site is in the local intranet zone, low security for the zone too.
In IIS (IIS 7 on Windows 2008) I had previously disabled SSL on Conf and Con/Int and Conf/Ext. Re-enabling SSL on these dirs allows me to login. I have successfully tested this in both environments, however the login banner still doesn't show in pre production. Now all I have to do is find out why it's not happy to use HTTP.
